Today we began by talking about how Mexico celebrates Christmas. We learned about Posadas and El Día de los Reyes. We then sang Christmas carols in Spanish and at the end played several games. ¡Feliz Navidad todos!
Tuesday
Today we began with our science test and the continued with Bible. We talked about parables and there was a worksheet that followed. They then wrote out their memory work for me and after recess they had math. 7th grade's homework is found on pages 128-129 #1-9, 1-4, 1-13 and 8th grade's homework is found on pages 143-144 #1-18, 1-18. The homework is due after break.
In the afternoon we celebrated the holidays. We began with Christmas carol puzzles and then watched A Christmas Story. After the movie we played a couple games. For the first game I read a story and every time I said right they passed their number to the right and every time I said left they passed it to the left. At the end of the story I told them the number I had picked before reading and that person won a candy cane. We also played a game where everyone was given a Christmas carol and they had to hum it and find the other person who was humming the same song. The pair that found each other first also got candy canes. After this I gave everyone a candy cane and also a gift of candy and a Christmas card. I hope all of the cards made it home!!!

One person would say a color (in Spanish) and the other had to think of a food that was that color. They had fun with it. I am amazed how quickly they are learning Spanish! In When we played 20 questions today I did not even have to write questions on the board they remembered them!

(5/6, 7/8) In Spanish today we reviewed frutas, vegetales, lácteos, pan y carne. After reviewing we played a game. I chose a food and taped it to their back. They then had to ask their classmates questions in Spanish in order to discover what they were. I wrote questions on the board for them to use such as "¿Estoy ____insert color___? (Am I --insert color--?) or ¿Estoy grande? (Am I big?) or ¿Estoy una fruta? (Am I a fruit?) and so on. They did very well using Spanish! Afterward we played heads up 7 up with vocabulary words.

Today we began with devotions followed by a Bible lesson. The Bible passage was from John and it was about how John describes Jesus both as God's word and also through his actions. We then looked at Bible memory which is Galatians 5:22-23 (The fruit of the Spirit). This will be due Friday. In science we began a new unit on motion. The students should complete the packet if they did not in class. In math 8th grade took a test and 7th grade worked on their review on pages 108-110 as their test will be on Thursday. Finally in civics we began with an activity on how a bill becomes a law. I separated the class into the house of representatives and the senate and I was the president. I gave them "bills" and first they had to divide into committees to discuss their bill. They either killed the bill or then presented it to the rest of the house. They then voted. If it got the majority it went to the other house. They did the same thing. If it passed in both houses it went to me and I either vetoed or signed the bill. I sent some back to the houses where they voted again and from both houses got 2/3 to pass it. We also watched the School House Rock video called "I'm just a bill." They students did very well!! We then continued with a lesson on the powers of Congress. This was followed by a few questions on pg. 80 #1-6. This should be completed tomorrow as well.

To play Sparkle you stand in a circle and because we did numbers we counted in order each student saying the next number. If there was a mistake made that student sits out and the next person continues the counting and once we reach the end (In 1/2, 3/4 we counted to 10 and in 5/6, 7/8 we counted to 20) the person after the person that said the final number was "Sparkled" and had to sit out. You continue until you have a winner!

Today we raked leaves in the neighborhood around the school! We did it in our friendship groups (this way we can mix up the grades and have them all interacting). After raking the leaves we all had hot chocolate and the kids had recess. Since it was a half day because it was the end of the marking period, we had the students in the classroom for about an hour until dismissal. In this time I saw the 5/6 graders for Spanish and also the 7/8 graders. We did activities using our family vocabulary words. We played charades and also I taped a card on their back and by asking questions in Spanish they had to figure out who they were! They did great!

They did quite well!
5/6, 7/8: This week we have been studying family vocabulary. We have done a number of activities. I created a cross word for them, we played around the world and heads up 7 up with the vocabulary. We played flyswatter and today I handed out cards with a vocabulary word and by speaking completely in Spanish they had to find their pair. So if their card said sobrino (nephew) they had to find sobrina (niece). I wrote questions on the board that we practiced for them to discover who their pair was! They did quite well! They are learning so fast! ¡Me encanta!

Thursday
Wow! It has been a couple days! Well this week the 7th and 8th graders have done a number of things! Both classes had a math test at the beginning of the week. The 7th graders have begun to study percents and the 8th graders have begun to study profit. In civics we learned about the Senate. In science we have been learning about elements and compounds. We are currently wrapping up a project on elements. Each student chose an element from the periodic table and then had to find various information about it and also create an advertisement that included the elements name, symbol, atomic number, atomic mass, cost and a slogan! The slogans they have come up with have blown me away! They are so creative! In Bible we have been talking about the early ministry of Jesus. We had a lesson about his first miracle (turning water into wine) and also when he cleared the temple of all the merchants. The Bible memory we are working on is Romans 13:1-3.
Thursday Homework: Science research, unfinished math problems (7th: pgs 80-82 # 1-13, 1-21, 1-4, 9-14. 8th: pgs. 85-86 # 1-6, 1-6, 1-14), redoing incorrect math answers on test, Bible memory.

Wednesday - Spanish
1/2 and 3/4: Today we began by singing our days of the week song and months/seasons song. They then tell me what day it is today, what day it will be tomorrow and what day was yesterday. After this we continued with weather. We reviewed our vocabulary and added more vocabulary today. Then we used the whiteboards to practice. I said the word in Spanish and they drew what it was. As we drew we practiced saying the word. They did a great job!
5/6 and 7/8: Today in Spanish we began by talking about what day it was and the date and then continued with weather. We reviewed our vocabulary and sang our weather song. Then I read the book Un Día de Nieve to them. They did a great job listening and understanding using the words they already know and also by looking at the pictures! Afterward we used the white boards to practice vocabulary. I would say the Spanish word and they drew what it was. As we drew we practiced saying the word. Finally we played heads up seven up with vocabulary words. Instead of guessing the name of the person they have to say the vocabulary word on their card.

Tuesday-Spanish
Today we reviewed our weather vocabulary. We sang our song to practice the phrases and finally played a game to reinforce the vocabulary. We played the game flyswatter. I had all of the terms written on a poster board. The students formed two lines. The front two people were ready with their flyswatters (I improvised with rulers) and I would say the word in English and they would have to find that word in Spanish on the poster board. Whoever found it first earned a point for their team. They were very enthusiastic and they did very well!
Tuesday
Today we began by analyzing the data we retrieved from our chemical tests on the river water from the Rouge last Thursday on our field trip. Thank you Mrs. Hartshorn for taking your time to take us to the Rouge River and to teach us these chemical tests! In Bible today we learned about when Jesus was tempted by Satan. We are learning the Bible verse Proverbs 12:22. We played Sparkle to practice the verse today. In math 7th learned about ratios. Their homework is on pages 68-69 #1-23. 8th learned about calculating discounts. their homework is on pages 72-73 #1-7, 1-4, 1-10, 21-24. In grades 1-2 and 3-4, we began by learning a couple praise songs. We learned "Yo Tengo Gozo" (I've got the joy joy joy) and also Padre Te Adoro (Father I Adore You). Then we continued by practicing our days of the week, months and seasons. Today we began to learn about the weather and various vocabulary words and frases associated with weather. We also learned a weather song.
"¿Qué tiempo hace? Hace sol. ¿Qué tiempo hace? Hace calor. ¿Qué tiempo hace? Está nublado. ¡Hace buen tiempo! ¿Qué tiempo hace? Hace frío. ¿Qué tiempo hace? Hace viento. ¿Qué tiempo hace? Está lloviendo. ¡Hace mal tiempo!" Translated: What's the weather? It's sunny. What's the weather? It's hot. Whats the weather? It's cloudy. It is good weather! What's the weather? It's cold. What's the weather? It's windy. What's the weather? It's raining. It is bad weather!
I also began TPR (total physical response) today to help the students remember the vocabulary words. Basically we act out the words in order to help us remember what they are! The students are all doing so well and learn so quickly!!
In grades 5-6 and 7-8, we reviewed weather vocabulary using TPR (total physical response). This is where we act out the vocabulary word in order to better remember what it means. We also sang our weather song. I had a worksheet for them to work on the phrases and terms we learned. Then we ended by playing heads up 7 up using vocabulary cards. Instead of saying the person's name they have to say the vocabulary word when guessing who put their thumb down. They are so much fun to teach Spanish to! They are very enthusiastic and always want to learn more!
